150 Years Since the Discovery of the Pile Dwellings – Let’s Celebrate Together

One hundred and fifty years ago, during ditch digging on the Ig Plain, the remains of prehistoric pile dwellings were uncovered. Dragotin Dežman was the first to systematically research and document this remarkable legacy, placing the Ljubljana Marshes on the map of European archaeology. Thanks to his pioneering work, our region is today part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

We want to celebrate this important jubilee together with you – through creative workshops, a public lecture, and convivial gathering where heritage once again comes alive as a story that belongs to all of us.

Programme for Saturday, 20 September 2025

Archaeological workshops for children and families
The workshops are open to all generations who wish to listen, create, and explore. Children and adults alike will have the chance to hand-make small clay vessels from DAS modelling clay, print on fabric with stamps inspired by Neolithic ceramic seals, discover prehistoric body decoration techniques, and try out skills that once shaped the everyday lives of pile-dwelling communities. The workshops are free of charge and do not require prior registration.
